The field intership portion of the course is broken down into three separate sections: Observation, Internship, and Capstone.
During the observation period, students will ride along with a variety of experienced EMS providers, learning about the different styles and philosophies of paramedics from several EMS services. As students gain experience, they will take on more responsibilities under direct supervision of highly trained preceptors. This will lead to the Capstone phase, where they will begin managing emergency calls independently.
After completion of at least 30 calls where the student is the “team lead”, the capstone portion of the field internship will begin, during this period:
- Students will ride with 1-2 carefully selected lead PFI’s who will help the student to sharpen their skills and become graduation-ready.
- Students are required to act as a lead for a minimum of 20 additional calls during this portion of the program.
- Upon successful completion of the capstone internship, students will be fully prepared to take their national exam and begin operating as a licensed paramedic.
